STORY OF KARAFUTO INU
The Karafuto Inu, also known as the Sakhalin Husky, is a rare and powerful sled dog landrace from Sakhalin Island. Developed by the indigenous Nivkh and Ainu peoples, these large, thick-coated dogs were prized for their strength and endurance in extreme Arctic conditions. They are now one of Japan's most endangered native breeds.
The breed rose to fame through the legendary survival of two brothers, Taro and Jiro. Left behind at a Japanese Antarctic base in 1958, they miraculously endured 11 months of -50°C blizzards with almost no food. Their story became a powerful national symbol of resilience in Japan.
